Great! I've prepared another test build but didn't publish it yet as I
have a problem accessing a SSH server to transfer files between
https://repository.apache.org and
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/struts/ - I wonder if this is
used at all be anyone.

Ah, ok! The main change here is to support for different formatters,
the case you had reported with "aa" vs "a":
<s:date name="#my.myDate" format="EEEE MMMM dd, hh:mm aa" /> <-- this
will work with simple formatter
<s:date name="#my.myDate" format="EEEE MMMM dd, hh:mm a" /> <-- this
will work with date/time formatter
If you are good, I will merge this PR and forge a new RC :)

Date is fine.
The org.apache.struts2.components.Date class can handle other types ie
LocalDateTime, LocalDate, Instant bean types, I can only test the
java.util.Date variant.
(..saying that, it would most probably work as LocalDate is the only new
variant introduced on this change.)
It works well for me. Thanks.

Not sure if I get it, current implementation supports: java.util.Data,
Calendar and long - we can add Timestamp if you want to

Great, one less call to hungry TextProvider😉.
Passes my tests, and screen wise, for me, each formatter matches exactly
struts.date.formatter=dateTimeFormatter
struts.date.formatter=simpleDateFormatter
##
Checking my beans, all of my dates are of type java.sql.Timestamp
(datetime on mariadb)
On class
Date.end(Writer writer, String body)
matches java.util.Date
Object dateObject = findValue(name);
if (dateObject instanceof java.util.Date) {
date = ((java.util.Date) dateObject).toInstant().atZone(tz);
}
I don't have any LocalDateTime (java.time) fields to test (would use
myBean.getMyDate().toLocalDateTime() as MyDate is Timestamp and then use
the java.time classes, dates now have become messy🙁).

Yes, it's ready. You can test different formatters by defining constant:
struts.date.formatter=dateTimeFormatter // new Java 8 API
or
struts.date.formatter=simpleDateFormatter // old SimpleDateFormat
Thanks!

Yes, I know this was not in the original rc, but its worth including in
this release if possible (to keep the plugin insync with the freemarker).
The default is now to hide the hidden field, so a review of tags might
be necessary.

Thanks Greg, very good catch :)
The problem is that the tag is using DateTimeFormatter [1] (a new API
introduced in JDK 8), but the unit tests are using SimpleDateFormat
[2] (an old API) and both of these classes are using slightly
different patterns [3]. The change has been made to support Java 8
LocalDate [4] and others introduced in JDK8, yet the SimpleDateFormat
supports only java.util.Date.
I added a note to the ticket and I will extend the migration guide.
