It turns out that issue #2 as I reported below is not always leaving a single
character. What it appears to be doing is leaving partial words in the
dictionary. Sometimes it's one character from a word, sometimes it's four.
Again, these partial words cannot be removed from the OpenOffice remove word
interface and must be removed by manually editing the .dic file with a text
editor. Also, the partial words issue seems to be related to whatever is
causing multiple duplicates of the same word to sometimes end up in the .dic
file.
