XSLTC can't compile simplified docbook (docbook-xsl-1.49)

I tried to compile what appear to be the main stylesheets 
for Norm Walsh's simplified docbook (the ones that do the includes) with bad
results

    .../html/docbook.xsl  Compiler error(s): null
    .../doc/book.xsl      Compiler error(s): null
    .../fo/docbook.xsl    Compiler error(s): null 
                          and warnings about attribs outside of elements
