[users@httpd] Apache 2 aborting downloads

I could really use some help here....
My configuration is as follows :

I installed XAMPP, which is an all in one package consisting of :

Apache 2
PHP5
MySql
Perl

It's running on a Windows 2000 server with the following hardware :

1Ghz CPU
512mb RAM

There is some other software running which takes about 100mb of the RAM.
Apache and MySql seem to eat a lot of RAM as well, MySql usually around
40mb and Apache fluctuates from 20 to sometimes 200 (!!) Mb of RAM. The
server has been running fine for a long time, but since 2 days, I cannot
download any large files from it. Large files are aborting at random
intervals. Sometimes I can download 1mb, sometimes 900mb ... I can't put
my finger on what is the problem.
The main site running on it is based on the OSS 'Mambo', some of the
modules on there use a lot of RAM and at first I thought the problem
started in the Mambo site with downloads that are generated by one of
the PHP modules in there, but even 'plain http links' don't work
anymore.
I tested with an open dir on the system and a 100mb file on it, download
it with IE or Firefox and both give the same problem .. I got like 20,
23 25 or 28 mb of the file :( So this is not a problem with the PHP
site... It also happens with 'regular' downloads.

In my Apache error log I see this :

[Mon Jun 06 14:37:19 2005] [notice] Parent: Created child process 3600

I googled for the status number and other people had the same error but
I could not find a lot of further info on it...
What should I do to further analyse this issue ? ANY help will be MUCH
appreciated !!

Allan
