I'm in the process of merging this PR. The PR contains commits we've changed as part of an earlier one. Hence, {{mvn rebase apache/master}} doesn't run through without failures. 

I'm fixing this for this PR by creating a fresh branch off of master and checking out the changed files from the PR, which is somewhat more laborious than we should make the merger's life.

It would be good to make PR's that contain a single commit relative to current master in the future (e.g. by rebasing the development branch frequently). That makes the merge a lot easier :-)
