RE: Tomcat + Virtual Hosting ( & Link to Info)

I have put up a step-by-step configuration guide to getting the latest CVS
of Tomcat up and running with relatively transparent VirtualHost support.
The instructions are geared towards getting things running with the standard
Saurik method of Apache configuration, but should be a good guide. Things
to keep in mind:

I always store web related stuff in /www. /www/etc is where my Apache
configuration is, /www/bin is where I store things like Tomcat (Urchin,
Halcyonsoft iASP, etc.), and /www/bin/cvs is where my CVS directories are.
I store Jar files under /www/lib/java in a complex directory structure and
have the CLASSPATH automatically generated by /usr/local/bin/class (what I
have in my CLASSPATH is mentioned there, I hope this doesn't become a
sticking point for people). And, finally, I have the JDK1.2.2 for Linux in
/usr/local/java (which is used while running apxs to set the include search
paths).

The document is at http://docs.saurik.com/deploy/tomcat/.

Sincerely,
Jay Freeman (saurik)

Subject: RE: Tomcat + Virtual Hosting

I would also be interested in documentation regarding Tomcat's support of
virtual hosts. I've already read all of the Tomcat 3.1 documentation, and
Tomcat 3.1's support for virtual hosts is simply not feasible for us.

Our company currently uses ApacheJServ 1.1, which has excellent support for
virtual hosts, but our servers cannot possibly handle the performance
demands Tomcat 3.1 would require...some of our servers have a few hundred
domains with servlet zones. Running a few hundred instances of a JVM would
bring our servers to their knees. Our customers are screaming for JSP 1.1
and Servlet 2.2 support, so we have to give them something, but we're not
even sure a commercial product like JRun can meet our needs (as near as I
can tell, JRun supports virtual hosts via multiple JVMs as well). If Tomcat
3.2 can support virtual hosts in a manner similar to ApacheJServ, that would
be a godsend for us.
