[jira] Commented: (CLEREZZA-204) Minimize and combine css and js
files

Reto Bachmann-Gmür commented on CLEREZZA-204:
---------------------------------------------
there's a tradeoff here: is we generate many different combinations of scripts a browser will be less likely to be able to access a script from the local cache, even if it actually would already have 90% of the script code in the local cache.
Basically we could offer an analogous feature as yahoo does, this would allow a get-request like: /combo?2.8.1/build/yahoo-dom-event/yahoo-dom-event.js&2.8.1/build/dragdrop/dragdrop-min.js&2.8.1/build/element/element-min.js&2.8.1/build/cookie/cookie-min.js&2.8.1/build/swf/swf-min.js&2.8.1/build/swfstore/swfstore-min.js
such a "combo" service would be easa to implement, however I wonder if the script references should be automatically merged to a combo-request or if it should be left to the developer to combine what seems appropriate (to have frequent combinations by keeping seldom stuff separate and thus allowing more client-side caching).

> Hi,
> While using the system it turns out, that each page requests approx. 70 files from the server. 90% of these are css or js files. It would be great to have a feature which reduces the amount of requests and file size, eg. by combining and minimizing (and caching) them before they are delivered. This can easily be done here:
> resultDocModifier.addScriptReference("/yui/2/paginator/paginator-min.js")
> resultDocModifier.addScriptReference("/yui/2/datasource/datasource-min.js")
> resultDocModifier.addScriptReference("/yui/2/datatable/datatable-min.js")
> resultDocModifier.addScriptReference("/yui/2/container/container-min.js")
> resultDocModifier.addScriptReference("/yui/2/resize/resize-min.js")
> resultDocModifier.addScriptReference("/yui/2/utilities/utilities.js")
> resultDocModifier.addScriptReference("/scripts/ajax-options.js");
> Thanks
> Fabian
