[users@httpd] httpd dead

hello

i am getting an error

httpd dead but pid file exists

i try all the possibilty to up my apache server.
like /etc/init/httpd stop then start
try to get the proceess id from httpd.pid file and kill it..
but no such process

can any one tell me how i can get solve my problem..

its very urgent..
