[jira] Created: (TUSCANY-1814) Large memory footprint with large
wsdl/schemas
Large memory footprint with large wsdl/schemas
----------------------------------------------
Key: TUSCANY-1814
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/TUSCANY-1814
Project: Tuscany
Issue Type: Bug
Components: Java SCA Data Binding Runtime
Affects Versions: Java-SCA-1.0
Environment: Windows/Tomcat
Reporter: Sunny Ip
Attachments: wsdl.zip
Creating services and components based on large wsdl/schemas (SDO generation/databinding, ws binding, etc.) results in very high memory footprint. Attaching sample wsdls that make use of the very large schema that we are using.

Thank you for the test case and it helps. I checked in the fix under r582399. I can start your composite successfully.
Back to the memory consumption, worth to point out that Apache XmlSchema doesn't provide the extensibility to resolve the XSD import/include to another XmlSchema object. Instead, the imported/included schemas have to be loaded from the main XSD.

Hi, Chris.
Thank you for the analysis. I just checked a set of changes that will probably fix your issue. It's under r582332.
Can you give a quick try? I'll also try to develop a test case using your WSDL/XSD but it might take some time.
Thanks,
Raymond

Noticed another problem caused by this change. When I have a wsdl that includes an xsd that imports another xsd, the TuscanyServletFilter fails to start (console shows SEVERE: Error filterStart) with this change. Going back to Tuscany 1.0 works fine. I have modified and included a wsdl that has this structure.

Re: Is the IFX license compatible to be included in our test case?
Posted by ant elder <an...@gmail.com>.
It only allows "development of software and/or data compilations which
facilitate electronic transmission of information in accordance with the
Specification and otherwise implement the Specification in user's products"
so maybe you could argue using the its xsd in a memory footprint test isn't
quite what they had in mind :) Thats likely being a bit pedantic, it looks
mostly ok to me, it allows things like derivative works, redistribution
etc. Could ask on the legal discuss list, but, if it is possible to create
our own large xsd without too much work i'd be slightly more in favor of
doing that just to avoid all the extra work getting the LICENSE and NOTICE
files updated and also to avoid any possible release review questions.

In general, it looks OK for our purposes but it is as well to check this
with the Apache folk who worry about licensing and legal issues.

Is the IFX license compatible to be included in our test case?
Posted by Raymond Feng <en...@gmail.com>.
Hi,
TUSCANY-1814 contains a test case which includes IFX XSDs. The IFX license
can be found at http://www.ifxforum.org/standards/standard/license. Do you
see any legal issues to include the XSDs in our test case?
If it's a concern, then we can try to produce a dummy monster XSD for the
purpose of memory footprint measurement.
Thanks,
Raymond

Chris Lo commented on TUSCANY-1814:
-----------------------------------
Hi Raymond,
I think the problem originated in the WSDLModelResolver.java class, the method readInlineSchemas:
wsdlDefinition.setInlinedSchemas(resolved.getSchemaCollection());
I notice that the schema collection being returned from resolved.getSchemaCollection() does not return a full set of the schema collection in comparison to the old code:
wsdlDefinition.getInlinedSchemas().setSchemaResolver(new XSDModelResolver.URIResolverImpl(contribution));
....
wsdlDefinition.getInlinedSchemas().setBaseUri(element.getOwnerDocument().getDocumentURI());
wsdlDefinition.getInlinedSchemas().read(doc, element.getOwnerDocument().getDocumentURI() + "#" + index, null);
If I put the above section back into the code, it seems to be able to resolve the schema definition from the included file.
I am not quite sure how the schemaCollection affect the memory footprint, if you could let me know, that would be great.
Thanks,
Chris

Yes I have. That fixed being able to query with ?wsdl using the original wsdl and xsd, but had no impact on getting a wsdl that includes an xsd that imports another xsd breaking Tuscany startup.

Hi Raymond,
I tried the r582332, it still can't resolve the reference. Here is a packaged war that is only missing the Tuscany Libs to be used as a test case.This war starts up fine with Tuscany 1.00 release jars. It has no implementation associated to the request/response object, so as long as the servlet mapping is added properly and the fitler get started without an error, then it passes the test case.
Hope this helps,
Chris

Thank you Raymond - It looks like we can get the services start up. We will keep you posted on the memory consumption.
To the note about memory consumption, does that mean that a wsdl that import/include xsd_A which import/include another xsd_B should be ok. But a wsdl that import/include xsd_A which import/include xsd_B which import/include xsd_C won't be able to utilize memory consumption improvement?
Thanks again,

I applied the fix (along with the fix for TUSCANY-1821) and preliminary testing looks very encouraging. There was an immediate drop in memory consumption and adding additional services did not increase the memory footprint significantly at all.
