Deprecation of SSL v2/3
I'd like to propose that we deprecate SSLv2 and SSLv3 in ATS 6.2.0 and
remove it in 7.0.0.
Currently our defaults do not enable them and have been that way for about
a year now. For 6.2.0 I'd like to mark them deprecated in the
documentation, and then we remove the code for 7.0.0. This will mean that
as of 7.0.0 you will not be able to enable SSLv2/3 even if your OpenSSL
library supports it.
Appreciate any feedback.
Thanks.

None of this explains why e.g. docs.trafficserver.apache.org nor www.ogre.com have these issues :-/
Can anyone else confirm this failure behavior?

Can you turn on TRACE3 level logging in HTTPD and see if you can find the
output of that? Trying to trace through the code path in HTTPD to see what
they might be doing different than us.

as strict as the ATS configuration (see below) and so no reason for the
current "ab" behavior
you can verify with https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/ the following two
subdomains:
* secure.thelounge.net (httpd)
* www.thelounge.net (trafficserver)

I believe what is going on here is that we use SSLv23_server_method() which
will negotiate the highest version of TLS supported by both sides, but does
so with the SSLv2Hello handshake. This does not mean we necessarily support
SSLv2/3.

It is my understanding that HTTPD matches the server method to only
negotiate the version configured. This means it is using something like
TLSv1_2_server_method() which only supports the TLS1.2 handshake. What is
your HTTPD config?

ok, but still don't explain why the same OpenSSL binary in the lcient as
well in the server don't suffer from this issue without ATS

I believe that is in OpenSSL

i have both at the same value
since i am not the TLS internals guru i can't say what goes wrong and
where, my httpd servers have "SSL 2 handshake compatibility Yes" and my
ATS servers never had
but that pretty sure explains "140575331768288:error:14077410:SSL
routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:sslv3 alert handshake
failure:s23_clnt.c:769" which don't happen to my other servers
given that this is for years now, don't happen on identical virtual
machine clones running httpd instead ATS for me ATS is guilty and not
any other piece in the stack
not sure what "s23_clnt.c:769" means since there is no "s23_clnt.c" in
the httpd source tarball from which "ab" at the end is built

Double checked the docs.trafficserver configs:
[root@docs ~]# traffic_ctl config match proxy.config.ssl.SSLv
proxy.config.ssl.SSLv2: 0
proxy.config.ssl.SSLv3: 0
I have no idea what this means, is there something in here that makes it properly detect that we handle V2, but do not negotiate it?

no idea - same with the build below - with -fsanitize=address it becomes
fat and unstable (no client connection at all)
#export CFLAGS="-g0 -fstack-protector -fsanitize=address
-fno-omit-frame-pointer"
#export CXXFLAGS="-g0 -fstack-protector -fsanitize=address
-fno-omit-frame-pointer"
#export CPPFLAGS="-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2"
#export LDFLAGS="-Wl,-z,relro -Wl,-z,now"
export CFLAGS="-m64 -O2 -g0 -pipe -fstack-protector -fno-strict-aliasing
-fno-omit-frame-pointer -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2"
export CXXFLAGS="$CFLAGS"

Yeah, it seems odd that it’d break like that because of compiler flags. But I honestly have no other ideas as to why it breaks on your system, and not mine :-/. Can anyone else confirm or deny this breakage on their installs?

i will give it a try ASAP, however the whole web and mail stack is built
with that flags (based on the flags below which are %{optflags} and only
ATS has the specific problem

Wonder if it could be one of those -f compiler flags? I’m attaching my config.nice that I run on docs.trafficserver, this compiles with ASAN though, so you likely want to remove that at least (if you are willing to try).

seems not matter that much since i have this issue for years now and the
httpd servers are built in the same environments with the same libraries
and don't have that issue
there where a lot of ATS and openssl versions over the time - looking at
the output of ssllabs the ATS box donÄt support some SSL3 *compatibke*
handshake for whatever reasons

I did the same test against https://www.ogre.com/ as well, which also runs ATS 6.2, on Fedora 22 (stock OpenSSL). It does not reproduce your problem either :/.

It fails too from that CentOS7 box to your box.

So it seems your ab works against this CentOS7 box running ATS v6.2.0 ?
What version of OpenSSL did you build ATS with? I am running docs.trafficserver.a.o with OpenSSL v1.0.2g if I recall (latest stable release).

i *never* was able to benchmark my ATS box in the last 4 years and SSL 3
is for sure disabled - as said: openssl on Fedora even don't support it
any longer at all
i *never* had a problem to benchmark of any httpd box the last 13 years
so what gives you ab -c 5 -n 100 https://www.thelounge.net/ on your client?

I’m not sure what problem exactly you are pointing at here. Is it a bug in ab? Is it a bug in your OpenSSL implementation? Fwiw, I’ve never been able to reproduce this, e.g. this works just fine on CentOS7 (and I have SSL v2 and v3 disabled, of course):
$ ab -c 5 -n 100 https://docs.trafficserver.apache.org/
Server Software: ATS/6.2.0
Server Hostname: docs.trafficserver.apache.org
Server Port: 443
SSL/TLS Protocol: TLSv1.2,ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256,2048,128
Document Path: /
Document Length: 229 bytes
Concurrency Level: 5
Time taken for tests: 2.758 seconds
…
Looking at your error messages, it sounds like your ab is trying to use SSL v3, which (hopefully?) is disabled on your ATS box?

Ok, here is my final plan then. I am going to mark them all deprecated for
6.2.x.
Then after branching I am going to remove all client <-> proxy support and
ifdef out proxy <-> origin support for SSLv3. SSLv2 will be totally gone.
Then add a configure option that reads something like
--enable-deprecated-sslv3-to-origin so you can re-enable it in the case
that you need it, but it's not even compiled in by default. We should also
leave the default as is and remove the config option from the default
config file so you have to track it down in the docs and read about how
unwise it is, etc etc.
Thanks.

SSLv2 has been deprecated for 20 years. No browsers supports it. MACs are based on long dead MD5, and SHA1. Handshakes are not protected from MITM corruption, cipher downgrades, or padding attacks. The ciphers are weak, some now considered merely obfuscation. And now with DROWN, whole companies, are vulnerable to all traffic and authentication being compromised if only a single cert sharing machine allows SSLv2 handshake.
ATS should not contribute in anyway to extending the 20 year deprecation of that protocol, or allow for accidental mis-configuration. I would suggest a re-compile be necessary for those interested in flirting with the dangers, perhaps an #ifdef INSECURE_MODE_ON, though I can imagine some might consider even that position morally compromised :-)

The consequences from DROWN (CVE-2016-0800 and CVE-2016-0703 ) are too severe on the whole shared cert infrastructure from just one machine being accidentally configured to allow SSLv2.
