status of the 1.5.x-issue2489/ branch?

What's the status of the 1.5.x-issue2489 branch?  It was created so  
that a authn-improved version of 1.5.x could be maintained, but now  
that 1.6.0 has been released with those authn improvements, what's the  
future hold for that branch?  Is it still being maintained, or can it  
disappear?

It is not maintained now since 1.6.x is out. Mark, please confirm if we still
need this branch.
