A hostile server (or pre-TLS *MITM*) returns a _subschema_ entry whose _attributeTypes_ value is "_( 1.1 DESC 'x\\5" (line ends two characters after the backslash)_.
The client calls _loadSchema()_, _getQDString_'s scan calls _isEscape_ at the backslash, _charAt(index+2)_ is past end-of-line, and *SIOOBE* propagates uncaught — the application's _catch(LdapException)_ does not fire and the thread dies
