BeanUtils to populate beans

I'm having trouble coming up with a good solution to populate my 
valueobjects and/or actionforms using BeanUtils.  For example, say that 
I have null values for some fields in my database.  Won't that blow my 
copyProperties method?  Apparently, there must be a workaround because 
everyone seems to be using the BeanUtils to copy properties....Please 
help enlighten a newbie.
