Logging and tracing

Hi
I am usingTomcat 4.0.3 and I am trying to log my operations in a log file, i
followed all the instruction without any success.

....
 private static Log log = LogFactory.getLog(myClass.class);
....
try{
} catch ( Exception e ) {
   log.fatal("Error:", e);
  }

.............
I am not being able to see the trace and I am not being able to see any file
at all with my logs in it.
what is the next step then.
