   While debugging some code, I've noticed assembleNewPartPath does not really return a new path. Also rewrote the code a bit so the mutable inProgressPart is changed in a single place.
   
   ## What is the purpose of the change
   
   Refactor the code a bit to make it easier to comprehend.
   
   ## Verifying this change
   
   This change is a trivial rework / code cleanup without any test coverage.
