[D] meta database: unnesting complex arrays [superset]
GitHub user Smarmz created a discussion: meta database: unnesting complex arrays
Does the meta database support json functions? Specifically I've got a column that is an array of json objects in a postgres DB. I've tried using the postgres functions (
```sql
json_to_recordset(datstr::json) record (a VARCHAR, b INTEGER, c INTEGER)
```
)
But I get an error of 'unrecognized token":"'. The query works fine when I go to the underlying DB directly via SQL Lab.
I understanding that the meta db is likely trying to evaluate the function & casting - is there any way for the meta database to send that part of the query on to the underlying DB?

I couldn't find specific information on how the meta database handles JSON functions or complex arrays in Apache Superset. However, if you're encountering issues with unrecognized tokens, it might be due to the meta database's evaluation process. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to bypass or modify this evaluation to ensure queries are sent directly to the underlying database <sup>[[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/master/superset/db_engine_specs/README.md)</sup>.

For the record, I got around this by asking the DB owners to create a VIEW that is essentially the unnested data table, and am now querying the view from superset.
