File permissions

Hi!
Please forgive me if this is a stupid question...
I'm working on a servlet that needs access to read, write 
and delete files on the server.

On a local machine, the servlet works fine, but on the 
server (running Apache) I get a 500-error (HTML - server 
error).

Could someone please help me???
