Merge fails when I hold lock status line: connection was closed by server

I have a simple project using apache security as front end
I can get and release lock
When there is no lock I can commit
When I have the lock on a file I cannot commit it

Sending        test.txt
Transmitting file data .svn: Commit failed (details follow):
svn: MERGE request failed on 
'/svn/ecomm/webprojects/autotest/branches/dev_gh'
svn: MERGE of '/svn/ecomm/webprojects/autotest/branches/dev_gh': Could 
not read
status line: connection was closed by server. 
(http://ghlx035ptlge.penske.com)

Related to same project I had situations where I got
svn: Lock request failed: 401 Authorization Required

where can I find out more about these errors
