Debian package
Hi,
I am considering deploying CouchDB on a Debian system.
I have noticed that the Debian package for CouchDB is rather old [1]. The
latest package version contains CouchDB 0.11.0 and currently there is a
security patch that is still to be added to the package[2]. My question is
really, would you recommend using 0.11.0 for production use? I mean, it is
included in Debian stable. Or, are there alternative ways to create a Debian
package for later versions of CouchDB? Or is a later package hosted on an
alternative repository?
To speed up the process to get the Debian package up to par with the
latest/later CouchDB release(s), maybe the Ubuntu package[3] could used as a
template?

I'd be grateful if anyone has any tips on deploying on a Debian system.
Thanks,
Jens

Hello Jens,
The Debian packages from Couchbase work great for me.

Couchdb packages past 0.11 are available for some versions of debian,
for example, on ubuntu lucid lynx you can install 1.0.1 from the
backport: http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid-backports/couchdb
Depending on your specific OS this might be an option.

Hi Mehdi,
Thank you for you response. Sadly, compiling from source is not an option
for me, as I might want to role out to numerous machines automatically.
Therefor, a Debian package would be the optimal way to go.

Hi,
Installation from source on a Debian-based system is straightforward. I
could do it following the instructions from the couchdb guide:
http://guide.couchdb.org/editions/1/en/source.html
good luck

Jens,
Why don't you just build your own Debian package using the up-to-date
couchdb source? It's remarkably easy. There are plenty of tutorials
about creating a Debian package, and there's no reason you couldn't use
the couchdb source package for a starting point.
Rolling your own .deb is fairly trivial, IMO.

Hi Huw,
Thank you for your response. I will look into your proposal. Building an
Ubuntu package for Debian makes me a little suspicious. Especially if it
requires me to ignore patches. Of course, the optimal solution would be if
CouchDB had an official Debian package that was up-to-date. I have sent an
e-mail to the CouchDB developer mailing list to further investigate if
0.11.0 (current Debian package version) should still be considered stable
(despite the fact there are numerous versions published after it).

Jens

I recently built some debs for ubuntu lucid like so:
apt-get source couchdb
tar -zxf apache-couchdb-1.0.2.tar.gz
mv apache-couchdb-1.0.2/ couchdb-1.0.2
cd couchdb-1.0.2
cp -a ../couchdb-0.10.0/debian .
dch -i
cd debian/patches
rm COUCHDB-413-missing-couchspawnkillable.patch fix-help2man.patch http-redirect-query-string-fix.patch icu-config.patch
cd ..
debuild -b
I deleted those patches because they failed to apply cleanly against the 1.0.2 source and I simply didn't have time to check if they were still required - I figured that all my source builds of vanilla 1.0.2 were fine so I could probably live without them. The emitted debs passed all the tests in futon so I think it's okay. YMMV!
dch and debuild are provided in the 'devscripts' package.
'dch' bumps the version and changelog entry.
'debuild -b' builds binary packages only.
Im happy to send you those debs if you would like them?
Cheers

Hi Jens
CouchDB 0.11.0 have been installed on our server through the Debian packages.
We got a basic use of CouchDB so i can't really tell you what are missing.
I just would like to add that in the current package, there is a dependency bug with jQuery which leads to Futon to not work.
If you want to run Futon, jQuery has to downgraded from 1.5.1 to 1.4.2.
Is seems to be the same on the Ubuntu package : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/couchdb/+bug/716237
