Getting the myFaces Sources for Dummies

Hi,

i spent a few hours searching the mailing-list about this issue. It
seems to be the No. 1 FAQ, so please help me (and a lot of others) out
and answer this thread if you have some information.

My Task: i need the myFaces (|| tomahawk || sandbox) sources.

What i did: read the f** manual. In lack of the manual, i read this list
and the myfaces Wiki.

I searched this list for 'sources' which gives me 369 hits, mostly poor
guys like me in desperate search for the sources. The frequently
answered answer is: 'simply look in
http://cvs.apache.org/builds/myfaces/nightly/, they are all there'. This
information seems to be a deprecated, there are no sources in the
nightly directory any more :-(

Whats´s next ? Let´s have a look in the Wiki. There is an article
'Building With Maven' which explains how to check out the sources and
build it with maven. Sounds great and just three little steps to get
through.

Step1 - Get SVN Client: I´m using Eclipse, so the subclipse plugin
sounds good for me. Now, i can browse through the branches in Eclipse,
but i can't checkout without building a new project for the branch.
That´s rather not what i want, i just need a directory :-(

Step2 - Install Maven: this works fine for me. I downloaded it and added
it to the classpath. 'maven --version' works ;-)

Step3 - mvn install: ooohh, tons of text in my shell, some warnings,
errors etc. After a few minutes, it´s over, but nothing happened in my
project directory.

Removing the sources from the nightly directory and switching to Maven
were two decisions from ASF that brought a lot of confusion to the
community (or i am the only Dummie around).

Can anyone be so kind and point me the actual way to the sources ?

There's nothing stopping you from using Eclipse to check it out.
However, you're going to want to close the eclipse project, move the
files outside of your workspace, and delete the project. Due to the
way maven works, you'll then reimport the project(s) back in later.

At the bottom of "Building With Maven" is

Building MyFaces in your IDE
http://wiki.apache.org/myfaces/Building_MyFaces_in_your_IDE

On this page is a link to:

Eclipse IDE - Using MyFaces in Eclipse

If you follow the directions here, you'll have all of your questions
answered. The Eclipse documentation for this has been worked over
several times and should be easy to follow at this point.

You can also find this page by clicking on the following link on the FrontPage.

Building MyFaces in your IDE - Building, Debugging and Deploying
MyFaces in your IDE

I also find it easiest to check out the files using TortoiseSVN,
however, as it saves me the step of stopping the build, closing the
project, moving the files, and deleting the project.

There is also myfaces-impl-*.jar, tomahawk-*.jar, and
tomahawk-sandbox-*.jar. Try looking in the */core/target/
directories.

As for the problem of finding the information in the first place,
please feel free to suggest (or implement) improvements!

Actually this shared thingy is a constant confusion problem,
there is an internal code reorg going during rebuild
where the shared classes are attached under different namespaces
into the different jars.
What you have to do is not to replace the tomahawk jars with the shared
ones, but add them to the build infrastructure additionally
so that myfaces-imple references
myfaces-impl-shared and myfaces-impl-shared-source etc...

same goes for the sandbox which has dependencies into tomahawk and
tomahawk shared (and 1-2 components into the sandbox)

All this shared stuff is done due to the fact to encapsule the
dependencies of the subprojects so that tomahawk, the sandbox, togago
and in the future adf will have an easier way to share code and still be
able to run on the ri as well.

Hi,

getting rid of the sublibse plugin was a good tip. With tortoisesvn, i
was able to checkout the sources and build it like described in the Wiki.

But whats next ? Maven has compiled the following jars:
- myfaces-api-1.1.4-SNAPSHOT.jar
- myfaces-shared-core-2.0.2-SNAPSHOT.jar
- myfaces-shared-core-2.0.2-SNAPSHOT-sources.jar
- myfaces-shared-impl-2.0.2-SNAPSHOT.jar
- myfaces-shared-impl-2.0.2-SNAPSHOT-sources.jar
- myfaces-shared-tomahawk-2.0.2-SNAPSHOT.jar
- myfaces-shared-tomahawk-2.0.2-SNAPSHOT-sources.jar

How are these related to the jars packaged in the nightly builds ?
I downloaded the latest nightly build and found the following:
- myfaces-api-1.1.3-SNAPSHOT.jar
- myfaces-impl-1.1.3-SNAPSHOT.jar
- myfaces-shared-tomahawk-2.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar
- tomahawk-1.1.2-SNAPSHOT.jar

Remember my (simple) task: Get the latest myFaces Snapshot and attach
the sources in Eclipse for code rewiewing. Now, i can replace
myfaces-api-1.1.3-SNAPSHOT.jar with myfaces-api-1.1.4-SNAPSHOT.jar. But
i can´t replace tomahawk-1.1.2-SNAPSHOT.jar with
myfaces-shared-tomahawk-2.0.2-SNAPSHOT.jar. All the custom classes are
not included.

Obviously, there is a huge reorganisation in code-packages, but how do i
know what is going on here ?

Does anyone know a less complex way to get the latest myFaces Snapshot
with included sources ? This drives me nuts...

1. Your not the only dummy: Yesterday I asked a question, which could
simply be answered by looking at the sources more carefully.
2. After Maven finhes there are a few directories more in your tobago
source directory: simply search for "target" or "*SNAPSHOT*" or "*.jar".
Each of the terms should work.
3. Try to use a explicit SVN-Tool for checking out such programs. That's
much easier, than with sublicpse. The mpst used is tortoisesvn for
windows.
4. Ist echt nicht so schlimm, wie es aussieht. Wenn man die ersten
Schritte hat (z.B. mit dem Blank example ...) dann macht das echt
Spaß!!!
4 (english) There is no magic and it's fun to use !

Ciao, Nils Drews
