[jira] Created: (GERONIMO-794) List only installed applications that are not part of Geronimo itself

List only installed applications that are not part of Geronimo itself
----------------------------------------------------------------------

         Key: GERONIMO-794
         URL: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-794
     Project: Geronimo
        Type: Improvement
  Components: management
    Versions: 1.0-M5
 Environment: all
    Reporter: Joe Bohn

A user should only see applications that they installed when accessing the list of installed applications from the admin console. We can still show the "system" applications but under an additional portet that by default is minimized on the page.

That's an idea. But, I think that my email reader threads these things.

I'm not sure whose problem that actually is. :) At a minimum,
perhaps you could review the subject line and not trash those that don't
start with [jira].

Aaron,

Please start a fresh email instead of appending to a Jira issue. I tend
to toss Jira notes into the trash w/out a second look.

Thanks Aaron. I am working on the issues that I created as I continue
to get indoctrinated into
this community. For now, assume that I will address these issues and if
anybody has any
knowledge to assist in any of these areas their help is certainly most
welcome.

Web Console JIRA Issues & Stuff

Posted by Aaron Mulder <am...@alumni.princeton.edu>.
All,
Joe Bohn filed a couple bugs in JIRA. Joe, I'm not sure if you're
looking to work on these, or just record the improvements you think we
should make.

In any case, if someone wants to work on the console, please write
to the dev list and say what you'd like to work on, so we know what's
underway. You can post any patches you come up with to a JIRA issue.

That said, here are my thoughts on Joe's issues:

794 -- I think the console should show all J2EE application deployments,
including the Console, JMX Debug Tool, and other "Geronimo" applications.
I woudl agree that non-application configurations should be shown
separately. I put my vision for this on the Wiki:

http://wiki.apache.org/geronimo/Web_Console (see "Proposed Content")

795 -- I'm not sold on minimize and maximize as a high priority -- I'd
rather lay things out nicely to begin with. But I wouldn't stop someone
from working on this if that's their itch. :)

796 -- That's... unfortunate.

Just a clarification on my last comment. I was intending to say that we might have to "exclude" (in the filtered view) more than just org/apache/geronimo for things like OpenEJB and "include" some org/apache/geronimo names for things like samples that the user might explicitly deploy.

-----------------------------------

Yes, that is what I was thinking we should have. Customers using an application server on a daily basis don't often need to manage the components that are delivered as part of the server itself. So let's eliminate the clutter and only show them their applications. My original recommendation was to split this into two portlets with the one including the system applications minimized. However, I think your recommendation of a "filter" is a better choice. We can update the current portlets to only display non-system applications by default and include an action on the glass to "show all" or "show system applications". This could act like a toggle that would extend the list to include the system applications or restrict the list to remove system applications (of course the action name would change to something like "hide system applications" when they are currently being displayed.

As for the mechanism to filter the set of applications I think that the package name is a good approach. We might have to include more than just org.apach.geronimo (to catch things like OpenEJB) and we might also have to include some org.apach.geronimo packages (such as samples that we might make available to users). However I think we will be able to provide the filtering based upon a set of criteria and not have to resort to "hard coding" any application names.

-----------------------------------------

If I understand correctly you want a way for each portlet that lists configurations to be able to filter the configs they list (system/user/both). This is easy enough to add. The problem is, how do you know that a config is part of the System? Do you use a naive filter where all configs whose ids start with "org/apache/geronimo/" are system configs and everything else is a user config?

I don't think we should go out of our way to suppress o/a/g modules, so I like the effect of the patch. We need more functionality on these pages, but that's a different issue. :)

Joe Bohn commented on GERONIMO-794:
-----------------------------------

I applied the patch and it does address a number of views that Aaron had requested. However, it doesn't really address the intent of this JIRA issue.

The issue that I was raising was that the user should have a way to limit the view(s) of applications to see only applications that they cared about (ie. applications that they installed to run their business). Therefore, I would like to see a view where the list of "installed applications" restricted to only show the accounting or payroll applications that a business installed and not the applications that are just necessarily part of the Geronimo package itself (like the console, ActiveMQ, Deployer, etc...). We should provide an alternate view that could display either all "system applications" (for lack of a better term) or a complete list of all applications including both user and system. However, we should be able to simplify the view to only what the user cares about 99% of the time.
