Hi,
Wanted to ask how you guys test your pages/components?
Cheers,

I haven't gotten around to using Ajax at all yet, but there's this:

yes, I also bumped into silenium and am seriously considering using it.
do you know if it has some kind of ajax testing support?

I finally took a look at Selenium. I must say, it's very slick. I was
up and running in about 20 minutes and had written my first set of
tests. I sent a note out to my high school kids and they're actually
psyched about writing tests now.

As an HtmlUnit user, I thought I'd pipe in a bit too. Dan, please correct
me if I'm blatantly wrong on anything here.

HtmlUnit, despite its name, tries to do a lot more than just HTML. So, the
framework is general, which seems like a great idea until you actually go to
use it and are forever casting things to their HTML variants, which, I would
imagine is the majority use case. It got to be such an eyesore and time
sink that we actually wrote another wrapper on top of HtmlUnit. The point
here being that HtmlUnit, while simple, is really cumbersome and you're
going to end up writing plumbing code you probably don't want to and
probably shouldn't have to.

Additionally, since it is integration testing, I've found it really hard to
say X percent of the code is covered by tests. I suppose use cases can be
covered, but actual units seem difficult, if not impossible. It'd be
interesting to see how you guys are calculating this metric.

Yeah I'm the only developer on this and I've found that using htmlunit
with tdd has helped a lot to keep development speed high. without tdd it
would take much longer.

We also have high-level methods for the particular components of our
application, but the development cycle is slow and we haven't achieved
to finish the test cases. We have little resources, but without testing
we can't get very far as any change takes longer and longer. Testing
really makes a difference on that.

Thanks.

I looked at httpunit before it seemed to be that htmlunit is simply one
abstraction layer above that so that you can test using the DOM and not
have to deal with the low-level http stuff. i've found that with
htmlunit you can write tests very very easily be writing utility
functions on top of htmlunit to deal with your own stuff. For instance,
we have a stand form for add/edit pages so there is a bunch of useful
methods for doing things with forms and form fields. i'm not sure how
the speed compares between httpunit and htmlunit but i'm guessing that
they would be similar (if not slightly slower for htmlunit because it
has to parse the page into dom objects). but while it's certainly slower
than normal unit tests i haven't found it to be a problem yet and we
have a fairly large system which is only going to get bigger.

I'm highly interested in this. We are using HttpUnit, and it works more
or less ok, but it is really slow. I think that this slowleness is the
reason we don't have 100% coverage (not even 50%). Not having a good
test suite makes me nervous.

I'l try to get 100% by the end of January, when things calm down, but
I'd love to know if you have tried HttpUnit and why did you choose
htmlunit.

BTW, do you know about a site or forum or some other place where people
share experiences and best practices testing database backed web
applications? It's not a trivial problem, IMVHO.

Thanks

Pedro

I use normal junit and some mock objects for testing my services (in my
case they are spring beans) and i use htmlunit for testing my pages.
using htmlunit has worked out great. we have been able to do tdd very
easily with htmlunit and have maintained ~100% code coverage (it's
actually 99.8% or something because there are some exceptions that are
really hard to reproduce like with concurrency and such).
