install: tag in Makefile.tmpl
This was brought up recently, but I don't remember a resolution.
Would there be great oposition in adding the following install:
tag to Makefile.tmpl? PREFIX would of course need to be defined.
install:
if [ ! -d $(PREFIX)/bin ]; then \
mkdir -p $(PREFIX)/bin \
fi
cp httpd $(PREFIX)/bin
if [ ! -d $(PREFIX)/include ]; then \
mkdir -p $(PREFIX)/include \
fi
cp httpd.h $(PREFIX)/include

The script really only handles the "installing apache for the first
time" case. We also have an install target in our Makefile, for those
who just want to reinstall the appropriate executables and such.
You'll see when you look at the script... little or no actual copying
is done. Instead it is mostly concerned with setting up a simple
default docroot, and making an "apache" wrapper script that can be
used to stop/restart the server.

I wanted to see an install target and Tom said he already had a script
which he's sent me. I'll look at it after 1.2. For now I think we
should forget about it. We can do without lots of bug reports about
make install failing.

Rob complained. I agree with him: httpd.h stays in the source, and
goes nowhere else. It really isn't designed to provide prototypes for
Apache util functions, although it does. Besides, it includes half a
dozen other files (conf.h, alloc.h, buff.h), and it'd just be a mess
at this point.
And I don't want an install script that just kinda half does the job,
especially not this close to a release. An install script should,
IMHO, install the binary, but also install the htdocs directory, and
set up some config files with good default settings specific to the
user's configuration. I think Tom or Paul or someone had mentioned tha
they had something like this.
In other words, -1.
