Can Java Request Sampler return value to jmeter variable?

I would like to use the Java Request Sampler to execute a java program to do some calculations/parsing. Then I would like the java program to return a string in which Jmeter can store to a user variable.   Is this possible and how would I do this?
 
Any starting pointers appreciated.
