When you say print to screen, are you using print() on the stream to see it on the driver, or doing a foreachRdd{ .. rdd.foreach { ... println... and looking at executor logs? print() uses take(), which will use only the first partition if it can, which leads to odd behavior.

Turn off backpressure, don't repartition, don't use print().  Just do whatever flatmap you're doing currently and print that to executor logs, to verify that things are working at a basic level.

Failing that, post a link to the actual code.

> My take from the ‘Simplified Parallelism’ bullet in the docs (http://spark.apache.org/docs/latest/streaming-kafka-integration.html), is not to worry about parallellism, as long as I provide sufficient resources. And 10 execs with 2 cores receiving from a kafka stream with 10 partitions, containing 10-30k events per 10 seconds, seems plentiful.
