I agree. A bunch of dfdlx features could be controlled by a single mode flag property.

dfdlx:compatibilityMode is a fine property name.

dfdlx:compatibilityMode is a fine property name.  Not sure I like "experimental", as that suggests these features are not even proposed yet. For example, the hexBinary with length bits is very solid. The layering less so (e.g., can't do checksums yet, but we know people want to do those), and the enum/type-calc stuff even less.
