Scarab (was RE: [ANN] in-house mail archive...)

At http://nagoya.apache.org/ I now see:

> The BugZilla Bug Tracking System
> BugZilla is the Bug Tracking System currently used by most Apache
projects.
> The Scarab Issue Tracking System
> Scarab is an alternative Issue Tracking System and it will shortly
replace the current BugZilla installation.

I don't have anything against Scarab (in fact I may even prefer it), and
I've no particular love for BugZilla (in fact I don't especially like it),
but out of curiosity, how is this sort of thing decided? I've seen no
mention of this switch up to this point. Is there a list I should be on to
see this sort of thing coming?

By the way, there's a typo on that page:

"Those pages are prudly served by the Apache HTTP Server version 2.0 and
Apache Tomcat 4.0."

Cool. I'd like to help out anyway I can. I'd like to see a better
answer to bugzilla.
It gives me wicked fits sometimes.

One major irk is I'd like to download patches with wget and just snatch
them automatically...but noooooo... Bugzilla, I spit in your general
direction (not that I had a better solution up to now).

Andy,

I am loving Scarab too. I have a copy installed on my laptop (along
with MySQL and Tomcat). It's administration is clean, the app is well
documented and user friendly.

Last time I inquired about it, Jason Van Zyl said that it was a testing
area. By virtue of the fact that it is running on port 8080, it is not
meant to be supported for primetime yet.

However, he did seem accommodating about adding a module for a
jakarta project. Just ask.

I will update it when I have a spare moment. Working on Eyebrowse's
Accept-Language handling ATM.

Any plans to upgrade? Anything I can do to help? Bugzilla is not my
favorite and I've been watching scarab from time to time and salivating.
 (as well as subversion)

I don't think anyone has been using it much yet.

On top of it, the version on nagoya is way old...:-(

It is very easy to install.

Dude... is that available to other projects? Secondly, are there any
bugs stored in it? I tried to run a few queries to try it out and got
no results. I'd love to try scarab and might convince POI to use it.
But I'd rather kinda start sooner rather than later because once we
have a lot of open RFE's and bugs it could hurt to switch.

So far I like what I see. I just want to take it out for a spin... Can
you maybe give me a couple hints on some queries to run?

Thanks,

Andy

No. This is a decision made by _ME_ and _ME_ alone, and, to tell you the
truth, either you agree, or, you find yourself another bug tracking system.

I'm fed up with BugZilla, and since I'm the only one maintaining it (meaning
waking up at 3 AM because some randomness happened and the CGIs are not
running anymore), I am the one who's going to decide...

As soon as Scarab is ready, Bugzilla is going to go "bye bye" (and, not,
noone has a voice on this but me and Justy). Or you can find another nice
place where to host your tracking system, and go from there ... Good luck.

I believe the question refered to the

" Scarab is an alternative Issue Tracking System and it will shortly
replace the current BugZilla installation."

Is this a decision made by turbine ?

In Scarab's case it is a trial for the Turbine projects and was decided on
those lists.

infrastructure@apache.org, or ask Pier who is usually the freak who make
things happen on Nagoya (or kicks butt until those don't get done! :)
