I'm going to tentatively close this bug.  With the redundent expression 
elimination code that was just checked in we see a 4x performance improvement 
on the submitted test.  Also Joe has done significant work to reduce memory 
usage by DTM RTFs (though there is still a bug on this).  It's still not as 
fast as Saxon.  After repeated experements, my best guess right now is that 
this is mainly due to state tracking... though the causes turn out to be spread 
out in various places and I keep thinking I have the smoking gun, and turn out 
to be wrong.  Anyway, hopefully the recent changes are enough to reduce the 
report from "severe".
