   I think this issue is still relevant, only the example should be updated to base `pa.ExtensionType`, like here: https://github.com/apache/arrow/blob/23cd1ff8f4e33b3207875e3395d2d6b1aeb1edc2/python/pyarrow/tests/test_extension_type.py#L130-L140
   
   I am currently working on creating an umbrella issue to cover all Extension support bugs and feature requests in PyArrow and will link this there.
