[VOTE] Official list of supported platforms

Hi,

Given no one has objected to the previous thread, I am calling a vote.

So let's vote on adopting the following set of platforms:
* Latest released CentOS (currently 6.0)
* Latest released Ubuntu LTS (currently 10.04)
* Latest released OpenSUSE (currently 11.4)
* Latest released Fedora (currently 15)

This means we can't check in any patch that will break any of these OSes.
It also means we can't upgrade a component of BigTop if that component
cannot be built or tested on all of these OSes.

This does not preclude anyone to add support for or maintain any other
platform, but this would not be a requirement for BigTop.

The vote is open for 72 hours, and is open to anyone on the committers
or mentors list at http://incubator.apache.org/projects/bigtop.html.

 Thanks!

I see. If it is closed then it closed. Changes are suppose to be revoted, I guess.

That was a question, not an affirmation :)
People have voted on something which is different than what Andrew want
to propose. So I am not sure their votes would still apply. Or does that
mean we can start a vote, have some people voting and then change the
terms of the vote and still apply the votes for the previous proposal?

The vote is now closed and I am about to count votes. So any additional
information is welcome.

Sorry if I am missing something, but why exactly a re-vote would be needed?
Any references to bylaws dictating it? ;)

I don't mind but after all these changes we would probably need to call
another vote, wouldn't we?

I would rather close that one since most people have agreed so far and
make another vote for CentOS5.
It does not impede on anything would be less confusing that way.

Personally, I think we should add CentOS 5 back and call it a day for 0.2.0.

Thanks,

Reverting to what? -1 or -/+0?

CentOS6 and openSUSE are still *very* important platforms we should support.
And as we agreed, I will run build and tests on all openSUSE and Fedora
once a week. I can also handle CentOS6.

If we add CentOS5 that's great, but I would rather close that vote first
and then add centos5 when we get the resource up and running.

I don't want to take the chance to loose support for CentOS6 or
openSUSE. It would be a lot more work to re-introduce them than keeping
them working.

Re: [VOTE] Official list of supported platforms

I'm reverting my +1 - OSUOSL doesn't yet have images for CentOS 6, OpenSUSE,
Fedora. I personally believe we should only officially support those
platforms which we can actually do full end-to-end testing on, and our
end-to-end testing is most definitely moving to OSUOSL, so...

My proposal would be CentOS 5 and Lucid for 0.2.0. Roman's working on more
images for use at OSUOSL, so hopefully we can expand the list for 0.3.0, but
for now, I think we're gated by what platforms we can actually test on.

Right now we are still setting up the project and working on getting
resources.
In the mean time, I am for example running some build and tests on my
own VMs.

So for now I would rather have us focus on a wider range of
distributions so we can ensure BigTop exercise most packaging paths. And
then, when we can get access to more resources we would add support for
CentOS5.
Having more frequent releases of Hadoop would also help (CentOS5 is
getting old and we can't patch anything for build or security issues).

I am also planning on setting up builds against trunk of each projects
so we can potentially help stabilizing them and ensuring they work
properly when they get released. This would make it easier to support
old GNU/Linux distributions.

I usually rebuild CDH on fedora + openJDK, and now BigTop on openJDK for

fixed in 0.22, 0.23 and trunk.
So I am not really concerned about its bleeding edge. Actually I am more
concerned about old distributions (CentOS5, Debian Lenny...) than the
bleeding edge ones.

I also noticed a few tickets on JIRA about getting hadoop working on Fedora.

Hi Steve!

I don't think the vote has been *officially* called yet.

Looks like this one should be now fixed upstream:
    http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2011-0560.html

Thanks for the pointer, though. I've started a wiki page to record
this type of information:
   https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/BIGTOP/List+of+known+issues+on+various+platforms
Hopefully it will not grow too long ;-)

On both of these point: personally, I'd love Bigtop to take a page out of
Ubuntu's book and have a ratio of LTS-type releases (where we support old
and stable) to ongoing type releases (where we support new and sometimes
bleeding-edge at the time) being 1:4 or something like that.

Thanks,
Roman.

The alternative would be the 5.7+ branches, which are what people tend
to run in production

+1, even if the first thing you have to do on a 10.04 installation is

I'm a -1 on this because it's too bleeding edge, it's not LTS, and you
will end up debugging fedora problems.

Re: [VOTE] Official list of supported platforms

fwiw, I am a strong -1 on officially supporting any platform that we don't
have automated tests running against, and given the install base for
CentOS/RHEL 5 out there, I'm -1 on excluding CentOS 5 from the supported
list.

The vote has passed with 5 +1s and either 1 or 2 -1s (depending on how
Andrew Bayer's last vote is interpreted).

+1 Andre Arcilla
+1 Edward J. Yoon
+1 Peter Linnell
+1 Roman Shaposhnik
+1 Myself

-1 Steve Loughran

Andrew Bayer is either +0 or -1. It was not clear but either choice
would not change the result.

Thank you all for voting, and ensuring a bright future for BigTop!

One quick thing - it's important to remember that this is not a
locked-in-forever list. We can review this at any time in the future, and I
expect we will. For now, we're specifically voting on what platforms will be
officially supported for 0.2.0, and onward until we opt to change that list
of platforms.

Since I want to focus on the list of supported platforms I am replacing:
"This means we can't check in any patch that will break any of these
OSes. It also means we can't upgrade a component of BigTop if that
component cannot be built or tested on all of these OSes. "

"This means we can't release any version of BigTop with broken support

can't upgrade a component of BigTop if that component cannot be built or
tested on all of these OSes. "

I already do that at least once a week (minus automated tests) for
Fedora as well as Mageia.
So I would volunteer.

If we can make sure that the trunk of Bigtop builds and package test pass on
Fedora/OpenSUSE, I'd be willing to +1 Bruno's original proposal given that:
   1. We can have somebody on the hook to run builds/tests there at
least once a week
       and fix the problems there.
   2. We can have somebody on the hook to do the same before we release.

Now, I *might* be able to get some free EC2 credits for BigTop. In which case
I'd +1 unconditionally, since it is cheap to have free EC2 slaves ;-)

Thanks,
Roman.

Ok, I will rephrase that part.

Everything already works on Fedora. So there is no more work involved
for 0.2.0 as there would be for 0.3.0.
See http://www.bmahe.net/repos/BigTop/ (I have rebuilt everything this
week end, but haven't had time to rsync my local repository)

We're voting on terminology here, so I think it is important to be clear -
"can't commit if it breaks X" means what it says. If you mean something
else, you should word it differently. =)

I'm still -1 on Fedora for 0.2.0, but would be fine with it for 0.3.0.

It's more about the intent than taking things literally. Unless I need
to write proposals in lawyers terms?
Until we get the testpatch infrastructure running, we still need to be
extra careful about what gets checked in. And we can always change our
policy in that regard.

Even though Fedora is RPM based (as CentOS and openSUSE), it is still
different enough from CentOS.
Furthermore I have also seen a bunch of tickets from people trying to
get hadoop working from their Fedora, which denotes some interest in
this platform.

Re: [VOTE] Official list of supported platforms

Yup, which is why we need good review, and why it'd be nice to eventually
get testpatch stuff working for all the supported releases, but we don't
have that yet, and I don't think we can reasonably mandate that everyone run
local builds of everything on all platforms all the time, etc.

I'm also -1 on Fedora currently - not sure what we gain by building on
there, really. Maybe for 0.3.0, but for now, I'd say we should just add the
one new supported platform in OpenSUSE.

We can't have perfect patches and things will break. But have to make
sure they get fixed rather sooner than later.
Otherwise nothing prevents me from checking a patch and forget about it
and block releases until someone else feels to fix it.

-1 on saying we can't check in a patch that breaks one of those OSes - the
important thing is that we can't *release* when any of those OSes are
busted.

I can do build/tests on my VMs every X days and report results until we
get this situation sorted out. Or hook it up temporarily for
builds/tests every X days.

Makes sense.

Now for the above 2 I'm not sure we have the muscle (yet) to increase
the build/testing matrix.

What do we want to do about it?

Thanks,
Roman.
