There were 2 issues here:

This is the new behavior:
- Non-printable characters except for the newtmgr control characters being input to the console were ignored.
- console_read() was replacing single characters by '\0'

Old behavior was:
- All characters were accepted by the console as input.
- console_read() would not replace single characters by "\0"
