best Java for RedHat?
Hi Folks,
I am setting up Cocoon on a Linux box for the first time (I am new to
Linux).
Is this a good JVM to be running, or is there a stable 1.4.1 for this
platform?
% java -version
java version "1.3.1"
jdkgcj 0.2.3 (http://www.arklinux.org/projects/jdkgcj)

Eeeeek...!
Just go for IBM or Sun JDK, Jeremy. IIRC, IBM has released a 1.4 version
of its VM, too.

Avoid it! Sun's JDK 1.4.1 is available for Linux directly from Sun. I am
also experimenting with BEA's JRockit 8.0, as it promises to be
blazingly fast ... but I'm having a few problems with it right now.
Sun's JDK 1.4.1_02 is 100% OK for Tomcat (or Jetty) and Cocoon.

Have anyone tried using Eclipse with JRockit? Does it add some speed?

I recently spoke to an ISP (positive-internet.com) who host Java and Tomcat on
Linux. They use the IBM one - better performance/more reliable, 'fraid I can't
remember their reasons. I can find out if you want to know.
Hope life's treating you well!

Sun has binary and rpm distributions for 1.4.1 on linux that work well
on RH.
BEA's JRockit is absurdly fast, and seems stable while running, but has
some issues stopping. It is supported by BEA if you are running RedHat
AS and don't mind forking over a couple thousand dollars, otherwise it
is simply available an unsupported. We have seen substantial speed
benefits using it in development, but haven't been brave enough to put
it into production because of the shutdown issues.
IBM's JRE/JDK has had similar performance characteristics for us to
Sun's. It works fine. It gets brownie points for installing to /opt via
rpm.
