Creating variables

Hi,

We have a need for myfaces 'compatible' tags that support logic and looping..
I have managed to roll my own logic tag without a problem, but would appreciate some suggestions on how I can create and set variables to be used for a loop. I'm looking to do something similar to the "var","row" and "count" of tomahawk's dataList 

Any suggestions / ideas ?
