I tried this with 1.6.0_05 on Windows, where it worked correctly. The problem is most likely in the platform-specific ImageIO providers included in the Java installation.
The simplest solution is probably just to comment out all the assertions that are causing problems for you. There should still be plenty of assertions to catch true regressions in our code.
