Apache Royale on Stackoverflow

Hi,

I think one of our pending subjects is to be present on Stackoverflow.
Starting to have questions and answers there and increasing presence over
time should be a key goal for us.
What do you think?

Thanks

Re: Apache Royale on Stackoverflow

Posted by Carlos Rovira <ca...@apache.org>.
Hi Josh,

thanks for pointing about how to do answers. As I signed in SO site, I saw
some indications about be very explicit and avoid questions that could be
"interpreted", So questions like you proposed seems perfect.

About availability for all people here: IMHO we should all try to setup and
account there and help as we can. That doesn't mean necessarily to move
from this list to SO. Just to be aware and in the same way we help here,
try to help there. And if any of you here spend 20' here spend only that
time (and only that) here or there. I think we all here want Royale to
succeed. I think this is a key point since people is in SO, and I'm sure
this is an opportunity to make Apache Royale better known to people that in
other circumstances could never know about it.

As all vote for "apacheroyale", it's ok for me too.

Thanks! :)

Re: Apache Royale on Stackoverflow

Posted by Alex Harui <ah...@adobe.com.INVALID>.
Those who want to help create a presence for Royale on SO are certainly welcome and have my thanks for doing so.

I think an "apacheroyale" tag is best.

I would not recommend making SO our main user support channel at this time. Some ASF projects do, but we already have users@ and also I think myself and others are unable to help on SO. I've had trouble getting established on SO in the past. In fact, I just tried logging in there again and I think they erased my account so I had to sign up again.

I'll keep trying if I have a few moments here and there, but for now I'll mainly help on the mailing lists.

Re: Apache Royale on Stackoverflow

Posted by Josh Tynjala <jo...@apache.org>.
Recently, I edited an answer to an old question about AS3 IDEs recently (to add VSCode and Moonshine), and the original question (which had been up for years) was almost instantly closed by moderators. StackOverflow has become very strict about open-ended questions that are more appropriate to discussion forums. Choose your questions wisely.

More specific questions that can be solved with a small code example are probably the best choice.

Look for issues that come up frequently. For instance, there are often problems if someone forgets to add a data binding bead to a component. In the question, you'll want a component that is broken because it's missing the bead. In the answer, show them which bead to add and where it should be added.

In fact, more questions involving beads are probably great candidates!

Question: How do I use some feature in component X.
Answer: This feature isn't enabled by default, but you can add Y bead to the component.

Re: Apache Royale on Stackoverflow

"apacheroyale" is fine with me.

SO's tutorial suggests that open-ended discussion-type questions fare worse
on the site than specific, solution-focused questions. I wonder if it would
be considered spam to "recreate" some of the conversations on tricky
Flex-to-Royale issues that we have already talked through in this channel.
Feels a bit like reality-show tv to me... An alternative would be to post
some of the current, not-yet-resolved questions. We might even attract
interesting response from outside the existing Royale community.

I'm opt for "apacheroyale" - I'm using it for almost all posts on
Moonshine's IDE twitter and fb, so it could be somehow consistent. ;)

Re: Apache Royale on Stackoverflow

Posted by Andrew Wetmore <co...@gmail.com>.
Carlos and I were pondering possible tags for such an adventure. Options
seem to include "apacheroyale", "apache-royale", or just plain "royale". It
is telling that none of these tags currently exist.

I am happy to lob softball questions to get conversations started, maybe:

- What's the best migration path away from Flash for an enterprise-level
Flex app?
- What are the options for IDEs for developing in JS? [I note that
"moonshine" is not a recognized tag on SO at the moment]
- How can I reuse my AS3 and MXML code if Flash is not an option?
Other leading questions?

I am happy to be the naive question-asker, but of course getting juice into
these conversations (and maybe drawing conversation-browsers toward Royale)
depends on those who have already found Royale providing answers.

Re: Apache Royale on Stackoverflow

Posted by Carlos Rovira <ca...@apache.org>.
Hi,

I as you used Stackoverflow just for consulting. Just create my account
now, so I'm learning too.

What does mean for Apache Royale? Nowadays, a way to measure tech impact
and how others could choose to go with Royale is see how easy is to find
answers to questions. So you know, we want to know how something is done
and people instead to go to normal docs, he google it, and normally for
development problems stack overflow use to have responses.

So, how we could "start"? I think we'll need to enter some common questions
and maybe respond ourselves ? I really don't know, but there should be some
way to start and have a "apacheroyale" tag for all the question related to
us.

For example, I think Andrew could be a good active to starting this if he
thing is interesting, both investigating the way to do it and starting some
questions so we can answer and easing the rest of us entering SO world..
