ILayout.Format: must it be thread safe ?

Hello Everyone,
 
    I want to develop my own Xml Layout and thus took a look at the
XmlLayoutBase
and XmlLayoutSchemaLog4j source code. My Layout will inherit from
XmlLayoutBase.
 
    I am just wondering, and did not found the answer in the SDK
Reference:
     must the ILayout.Format method be thread safe?
