[HEADS UP] Preparing 0.10.0-beta-incubating-rc3

Hi folks,

I opened all the PRs for 0.10.0-beta-incubating-rc3:
* https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/1573
* https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/1565
* https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/1562
* https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/1561
* https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/1560

I will merge it and cherry pick on release/0.10.x branch.

As part of https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/1562, when a
contributor code from another project (with a ASF compliant license of
course), don't forget to add "copied from" comment.
It would help to check and list in the LICENSE.
Also, in the PR, I disabled spotless for header: spotless overwrites
all headers I defined to "force" the use ASF header (which is wrong,
we have to keep the original code header).

I will do a full pass: I would like to submit
0.10.0-beta-incubating-rc3 to vote tonight or tomorrow morning (my
time).

Thanks !
Regards
JB

Hi

Yes, that's expected, and we do that in a lot of Apache projects:

https://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/activemq/apache-activemq/6.1.6/
https://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/karaf/apache-karaf/4.4.7/
etc

Yes both is ok.

For convenience, having distributions available on dist/download, maven
central and by extend on docker hub is a good thing for the users.
Especially for Maven Central, it’s very convenient because people can
easily create custom distributions using the maven-assembly-plugin for
instance.
In ActiveMQ or Karaf, we have a lot of users doing custom distributions by
using the default distributions available on Maven Central (automatically
using maven and maven artifact resolution).

Thanks JB for the clarification! To make it clear, I assume it's also OK to
not publish the binary bundle to maven repo, but only the ASF's official
distribution directories(https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/release/).

To be clear

1. The only required distribution from ASF is source distribution
2. for convenience we publish the binary distributions in both
dist/download and Maven Central

Maven Repository can host any artifacts, and it's convenient for users.

Almost all Apache projects do that and that's totally fine with the ASF policy.

We published the binary distribution bundle to the Maven repository in RC2.
You can see it here:

https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachepolaris-1012/org/apache/polaris/polaris-quarkus-server/0.10.0-beta-incubating/

Are we supposed to do that? From my understanding, the Maven Central
repository is meant for publishing individual artifacts like JARs, source
JARs, Javadoc JARs, and POM files only. Full binary distribution bundles
(e.g., .tar.gz, .zip) should instead be uploaded to the ASF's official
distribution directories such as:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/release/

Can someone confirm if this is the expected process?

Hi folks,

During my check, I've seen that the spark plugin builds a runtime jar
(shading iceberg and other jar).
Even if not distributed (for now), those jar files should include
DISCLAIMER, LICENSE, and NOTICE. I will work on that.

It's not a blocker for the release (as, again, not distributed today),
just a note.

RC3 is flying right now, vote will start soon.

Hi folks

I merged the PRs required for RC3 (and cherry picked on the
release/0.10.x branch).

I'm doing a full build/pass on the release branch and I will submit
RC3 to vote. It will be tomorrow morning (my time).

Thanks everyone for the PRs review !
