Problem deploying ejb combined with struts

Posted by "Leslie Bertels (Synergetic)" <le...@synergetic-solutions.be>.
Hi all,

I have a problem deploying my application.

Used configuration:
JBoss 3.0 - Jetty 4.1
EJB 2.0
Servlets - Struts.

When I create my application.xml
I need to add a <ejb> module otherwise the appserver does not deploy the
ejbs.
But if I do, my struts are no longer accessible.

    This is the error :

        java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/struts/action/ActionForm

If I leave the <ejb> module out, the struts compile and are accessible
trough the JSP's but
when trying to access the ejb's (since they are not deployed)

    Following error occurs:

        javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: LogonSession not bound

Meaning I need to come up with a solution for this.

If anyone has encountered this problem, could you please let me know, maybe
I can send over my xml and .ear file
so you could have a look if my structure is wrong.

Thanks in advance,
Les.

Losing my sanity: 1.1b & Validator problems

Posted by Andrew Shirk <sh...@ncsa.uiuc.edu>.
I upgraded to Struts 1.1b last week (and to Tomcat 4.1.9 - which is
great great stuff) and everything seemed to go fine. However, today, I
was demonstrating my app to a friend when I noticed Validator
validations were not being performed. I checked the logs and the
validation configuration files are being loaded just fine, but still no
validation errors were being caught. I also noticed in the archives
mention of a change in the way the plugin is configured in struts-
config.xml. I made the change in my struts-config.xml thinking that must
have been the problem, but alas, things got worse! Now, when the
ValidatorForm is posted to the server, nothing happens at all! After
about 10 seconds of processing, the browser seems to receive an empty
response. A blank document is all that's received. I checked the logs,
and no exceptions are being thrown. I have checked everything I can
think of 4 or 5 times, and don't know what else to do. This worked
perfectly in 1.1a.

Please help if you have any ideas.

Thanks very much,

Andrew

registrationForm extends ValidatorForm

     <action path="/registration/save"
                type="com.myapp.action.RegistrationAction"
                name="registrationForm"
            validate="true"
           parameter="save"
               scope="request"
               input="/registration.jsp">

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Struts Console v3.0

Posted by James Holmes <jh...@yahoo.com>.
I don't plan to change this because Struts Console is
heavily dependent on the config files matching the
official DTDs. However, if you really want to turn it
off you can at your own risk by going to the "Options"
menu. Right now this only works in the standalone
version, but I'm working on adding this to the plugins
as well.

speaking of validation, James, would you consider relaxing the
requirement that struts-config files be validated? Struts itself no
longer requires this. I submitted an enhancement patch which I'm
working with locally (to support context-relative exception paths).
Since the official DTD doesn't allow that attribute in that location,
I can't use Struts Console with that struts-config file...

alternatively, you could commit my patches for me :-)

Well, you don't have to upgrade to the Commons
Validator to use the new DOCTYPE. The old Validator
stuff should ignore that as it doesn't perform
validation on the config files (AFAIK).

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Struts Console v3.0

Posted by Dennis Muhlestein <de...@zserve.com>.
We've been using the struts validation package and I'm wondering if it
isn't wise to change now. Any suggestions on the easiest way to update?

Can we just download the commons validation? What do we need to do to
integrate with struts?

Thanks
Dennis

Your validation.xml files need to have this DOCTYPE to
work with Struts Console:

<!DOCTYPE form-validation PUBLIC
     "-//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Commons
Validator Rules Configuration 1.0//EN"

This is the official DOCTYPE for Validator config
files as of last week.

Seems there is no validator 1.0 dtd on jakarta.apache.org/struts/dtds/..
I can't open my validation.xml file because it uses the 1.1 dtd so I
tried the 1.0 to see how that would work, but I got 404 error.

Can you just put a dtd somewhere?

Thanks

Struts Console keeps a copy of the DTD locally and
uses it, thus you shouldn't be having to wait for a
server somewhere else.

Ok, as a note I would suggest to make it work with local-adresses to. It it
quite useful when developing. Don't have to wait for an server on the other
side of the world to act and no problem with being offline.

Maybe, although it doesn't help much.

At most, it will close the TCP/IP socket on which it established the
connection and sent the request. The server will never see this if there
is a proxy or load balancer in between it and the client. Even without
that, the server probably won't detect it until it tries to write the
response -- and, even then, it's quite common for your *application* to
never find out because the response page is buffered, and the I/O error
occurs only after your servlet returns, and the server tries to flush the
buffer.

Once in a while, you'll see "socket closed" type error messages in your
server's log files, but most containers have been modified to swallow this
sort of "error message" because it happens so often.

Requests and the stop button / links / etc...

Posted by Andrew Hill <an...@gridnode.com>.
Just want to confirm an assumption:

When a user submits a form , or initiates a request, and then while that
request is being processed hits the stop button, or clicks a link, will the
first request continue to be processed (my current assumption is yes).

The browser doesnt send some kind of 'stop' signal to the server does it?

I presume that the response to the first request is sent to the same place
as lost pens and odd socks?

Struts Console requires that your DTDs are fully
qualified and won't be able to validate your config
files otherwise.

Here is the DOCTYPE for 1.1 config files:

<!DOCTYPE struts-config PUBLIC
          "-//Apache Software Foundation//DTD Struts
Configuration 1.1//EN"

I don't know if this is about Struts-Console or if this behavior is
specified into the XML-standard. The problem is that SC doesn't find a DTD
local to the XML-file. Sun ONE Studio and Tomcat do find the DTD with out
complaining.

[Q] Using tiles definition in global-forwards...

Posted by John Nikolai <jn...@mac.com>.
I have searched the mail archives for this and found the following
message:

http://www.mail-archive.com/struts-user@jakarta.apache.org/msg61840.html

Basically I want to put a tiles definition into a global forward like
this:

------
<global-forwards>
         <forward name="welcome"
                  path=".tiles.definition"  />
</global-forwards>
------

but when I call the following in index.jsp:

------
<%@ taglib uri="struts-logic" prefix="logic"%>
         <logic:forward name="welcome"/>
------

I get a 404 error saying:

-----
The requested resource (/xyz/.welcome) is not available.
-----

The workaround posted in the message referenced above says to create a
custom action forward and call it with a parameter with the tiles
definition. This, to me, seems like a quick hack to work around the
fact that tiles is not quite fully integrated into struts yet. Of
course I could be completely wrong saying that and if so I apologize
(with a nod to Cedric for his hard work! ;-). I wrote up a bug (#18241:
http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=18241) which was
closed saying this was already working.

Can someone please help and show me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks for your help,
  - John

Re: RE : [ANNOUNCE] Struts Console v2.0 Problem with roles attribute in Struts-Config.xml

Posted by James Holmes <jh...@yahoo.com>.
The roles attribute was added to the Struts 1.1 DTD on
June 28, 2002 and thus will only work for nightly
builds after that. If you are trying to use the roles
attribute with 1.1b1 or nightly builds before June 29
it will not work.

There have been many changes to the DTD for 1.1 since
it is still in beta. The DTD should be pretty stable
now, but it could change before 1.1 is released if the
developers find it necessary.

BTW, the Struts Console v2.0 is using the latest DTD
as of its release and thus supports all the new
settings.

Hope that helps.

RE : [ANNOUNCE] Struts Console v2.0 Problem with roles attribute in Struts-Config.xml

Posted by Jean-François Brassard <jf...@videotron.ca>.
Hi James,

You add roles attributes for struts-config.xml 1.1 but when i compile a
found this errors:

- Parse Error at line 43 column 138: <Line 43, Column 138>: XML-0137:
(Error) Attribute 'roles' used but not declared.

org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: <Line 43, Column 138>: XML-0137: (Error)
Attribute 'roles' used but not declared.

I download the last Struts 1.1, roles attributes it is supported? Is is
a solution for supported this attributes?

Thank you

Struts Console is FREE software.

This release is adds new features and fixes many bugs,
but most notably adds support for Tiles configuration
files. This release also adds support for all of the
latest 1.1 config changes.

Changes with Struts Console v2.0

*) Fixed bug where Edit button was not properly
being disabled for Properties and Form Properties
which would allow Edit to be selected when no row
was highlighted and thus causing exceptions to be
     thrown.

*) Fixed bug where Properties and Form Properties
tables weren't being updated after a row had been
     edited.

*) Fixed bug where Forwards and Exceptions were not
     properly being removed from Actions.

*) Fixed bug where changing an Action from using a
Form Bean to "<none>" would wrongfully set the
     Action's "name" attribute to "<none>".

*) Fixed bug in standalone app where after
performing "Save As" on a file, the GUI wouldn't
indicate whether or not a file had changes or
not.

*) Fixed bug in Page Converter where an exception
was thrown when trying to write files to a
     different directory.

*) Added support for Tiles configuration files.

*) Added support for "roles" attribute to Action
     screen for 1.1 config files.

*) Added support for "forwardPattern", "pagePattern"
     and "inputForward" attributes to Controller
     screen for 1.1 config files.

*) Added support for "bundle" attribute to Exception
     screen for 1.1 config files.

*) Added ability to move elements up and down in
     relation to their parent.

*) Added ability to specifiy the number of lines
between elements in the Ouput Options.

*) Added "Key" column to Exceptions tables and
make "Key" a required field per the latest DTD
     for 1.1 config files.

*) Updated Data Sources screen to be more consistent
     with the other screens.

*) Extensive refactorings to improve performance and
     reduce code size.
