I noticed a similar problem with memory usage in the SplitJson processor.  In late 2017, I wrote a custom "SplitLargeJson" processor as part of a project with my company.  I asked for permission to submit the work as a pull request to Apache NiFi... but it took a while (about 15 months) for my request to be approved.
