The patch starts including $HIVE_HADOOP_OPTS when running HiveServer2.

I agree that there should be something parallel to HIVE_METASTORE_HADOOP_OPTS for HiveServer2, but I think if the variable name were HIVE_SERVER2_HADOOP_OPTS that would be more clearly targeted for HiveServer2.

In addition to patching the .sh, hive-env.sh.template should probably also be updated to at least mention the existence of the variable.
