Configuring svn / firewall for svn checkout from behind NAT/firewall from a remote svnserve

I've been trying to checkout a project from svn.debian.org (only allows
svn protocol) on a client
behind a computer I have doing NAT & firewall, with no success. It keeps
stalling (hanging). It took me a while to realize it was the
networking (NAT or firewall or both) because a) other things like
passive ftp and web browing work, and b) I could svn ls short
directories. I finally installed the subversion client on the router
and was able to checkout the project with no problems. Is this a known
problem with subversion, and how can I alter my firewall rules/NAT to
accommodate subversion?

TIA,

Daniel
