[jira] [Commented] (LEGAL-114) License Header - Short Form?

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-114?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=13595182#comment-13595182 ]

Noah Slater commented on LEGAL-114:
-----------------------------------

I posted a message to legal-discuss:

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/www-legal-discuss/201209.mbox/%3CCA%2BY%2B4462usX2Zjwu%2B7_jfZVfYz-ZN%3DDhsQuDwPMNZ-hbX--quA%40mail.gmail.com%3E

> We're just going through the configuration files we ship with CloudStack,
> and it occurred to me that given the simplicity of most of these files, we
> might want to distribute them with a more simple, more permissive license.
>
> To quote the GNU maintainer manual:
>
> > Small supporting files, short manuals (under 300 lines long) and rough
> > documentation (‘README’ files, ‘INSTALL’ files, etc.) can use a simple
> > all-permissive license like this one:
>
> > Copying and distribution of this file, with or without modification,
> > are permitted in any medium without royalty provided the copyright
> > notice and this notice are preserved. This file is offered as-is,
> > without any warranty.

Sam Ruby brought up a concern that people in Apache should be comfortable using the Apache license:

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/www-legal-discuss/201210.mbox/%3CCAFG6u8Hsv_vxkaTxs3F%2BON2k6goMWWqR%2B0Er%2BTPF14ZX95aw1A%40mail.gmail.com%3E

However. The goal here is not to make the license more permissive. It's just to simplify it so that it can fit on a few lines.

I believe this would be advantagous for small supporting files that the user is interacting with.

Small documentation files, config snippets, etc.

Why would this proposal need someone from the Thrift community to drive it?

Can we not just decide that we're interested or not. And then if we are, ask legal council to take a look at it?

What more do we need to actually do here beyond that?

> Hi all
> Today the license headers within files does need ~ 15 lines within a file.
> This needs lot of space at the top of a file, probably too much if you have a small README file.
> e.g. http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/thrift/trunk/tutorial/README?view=markup
> Is it possible to use a smaller header reflecting the license terms within a source or README file?
> Can we use something like that one or a shorter one?

> Should we mention also the License identifier (Apache-2.0) used within spdx standard?
> see http://spdx.org/licenses/
> Thanks,
