setting up a mailing list

Hi,

I'd like to set up several mailing-lists with James. Looks like support 
exists for this. But the documentation is scarce.
For example:
- what's the email address and what's the format of the message to be 
used to subscribe/unsubscribe a user ?
- is it possible to subscribe users whose accounts are not handled by 
james ?
