"Good Frist Issues" for newcommers
Hi everyone!
In the last BoF, we discussed the possibility of creating and assigning a
"good first issue" to some Apache projects and attracting newcomers.
I made a small wiki page with this topic, covering the motivation, the
objective, and how we can start it.
You can find it here:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=278465058
Please let me know what you think.
I will start doing some research on the Apache reports to try to identify
potential participants.
I believe one of the incubator projects (Wayang) might be already
interested, but let me know if they can participate.
Have a lovely evening!
Gláucia

I think so - but likely Justin would be the best person to at least point
you in the right direction there :)

Hi everyone,
Happy everyone has access now :)
More people are in the initiative!

Seems good. I will add it to a ToDo list in the wiki and start to pick some
opinions.
They run a successful "my first

Yeeesss! This was something we discussed on the BoF of Diversity.
We can reach the Marketing team to understand better how to achieve this! :)
One more question: Do you think Incubators projects can be a candidate for
the GFI?
Once again, thank you all for your support!

Yep. I think it was cool to see short stories of different people
regularly appearing in social media. That was the best part and I think it
is what made it rather "sticky".

Hi everyone,
I created a page with some good ideas we can work on next year (or even
start this year, who knows):
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/EDI/Projects+and+Ideas+Drafts
@Rich, I really enjoyed the podcast idea, and I may have one or two
people interested. Let's see how it goes :)
I will also contact some of the projects Jarek referred in the docs to get
they feedback about the good first issues so we can get prepared to
implement it. If anyone can/wants to help, let me know :)
Cheers,
Gláucia

That's really amazing to know! We can think as a further initiative of the
Diversity area to interview some people to speak about their experiences.
There is a lot of topics we can cover.
I will also create a wiki with this idea so we don't lose it.
Thanks!

We have a podcast - https://feathercast.apache.org/ - but it's been on
a bit of a break lately. In fact, I just recorded one this morning, for
the first time in more than a year.
As part of the rebrand, we're probably not going to call it feathercast
any more, but I do hope to start doing it again, and always need
volunteers to record/edit/speak.

Really enjoyed the idea. I don't know how Apache handles podcasts, but
definitely, we can definitely do some interviews and at least publish a
blog post on the news media.
If you have time, do you mind contacting them to see if they would be
interested in replying to some interview questions? :)

Hi Shane ,
Please add the 'aarora' id.
I appreciate it.
Great suggestion Jarek , Is this what you meant :

I was also thinking of some stories like :

It is from a dear friend and I know a couple of more great women who may
probably pass the opportunity to present at the conference but have been
instrumental in implementing some revolutionary features in some projects.
Maybe we can publish a short interview or monthly podcast celebrating such
stories.

Thanks Shane.
Added a section with links to those projects I know are using it (probably
there are more).
Good luck with the initiative Atita,
I think it's a very important aspect of a welcoming OSS project to attract
new contributors, and I hope more ASF projects will follow (and I am sure
people in those projects will be happy to share their experiences with
those who would like to try.
Also a suggestion if I may propose something - maybe it's worth bulk- check
and reach out to those projects that already use it as well if they are
happy with it / can share their experiences.
I won't have time to do anything other than share our experience if asked
as I have to focus on other things, but maybe it's could be a good idea to
reach out to press@a.o. They run a successful "my first
contribution campaign", that attracted - I think - a lot of attention, so
maybe this initiative could spark some other small campaign, which might
help to reach to other projects and people (in and out of the ASF).
Just a suggestion.

That ID doesn't exist in Confluence. There's a atitaarora ID that has a
profile picture, and an aarora ID.
You probably want to switch to the aarora ID, since that's the same one
as your overall ASF ID and uses the same LDAP login credentials as
subversion and various other committer tools.
Let me know which ID you want to use, and I'll add you.

I would appreciate it if you add the links and any other thoughts here.
Feel free to do it; this is live documentation!
Also it might be worth mentioning that for those projects (so pretty much

I will add this info to the wiki!
I am glad I addressed the relevance of this initiative in the wiki; this
was my main concern.
Now that I have finished most of my Master's activities, I will come back
to this subject.
Team, please let me know if anyone also has any considerations.

Re: "Good Frist Issues" for newcommers
Posted by Jarek Potiuk <ja...@potiuk.com>.
I think it's a good idea to encourage other projects. I read the page and
it very well describes the effects such tags might have (from our
experience)
One proposal - I have not seen how projects that are already doing it might
be used as "good examples" - but I think we will be happy to share our
(good) experiences - and it might be a good thing to refer to some other
projects whe are already doing it - for example we could add "Project X is
doing it for years, if you want to see effect of it - here is the link, and
you can go talk to them - for example on devlist or on #issue-triage
channel on their slack etc. ). Happy to add such links to the wiki if you
think it is a good idea. Those projects might get "mentoring" or rather
"lead by example" function in the process.
For example I know that most of the projects from the "data engineering"
area that are close to us already follow that: Apache Airflow, Apache
Beam, Apache Superset, Apache Iceberg - are all actively marking issues as
"good first issues" during their triaging.
I don't speak for others but our experience is very positive - people are
actually actively looking and "grabbing" such "good first issues" - we also
use them during our contribution workshops and in talks when we are
encouraging people to contribute.
Also it might be worth mentioning that for those projects (so pretty much
everyone) that use Github, the "good first issue" is already part of the
Github Ecosystem and tagging issues with "good first issue" label taps into
to that. This is also why it is part of the standard process of triaging
issues by a number of projects. it is also is supported and encouraged by
Github in their "Building Communities" documentations -
https://docs.github.com/en/communities/setting-up-your-project-for-healthy-contributions/encouraging-helpful-contributions-to-your-project-with-labels.
So it's worth to be aware that we are not reinventing the wheel and opening
doors, but rather we are telling our projects how they can tap into even
bigger ecosystem that is already there.
So it's not just a "label" - it also makes the issues automatically
discoverable and surfaced by other mechanisms that already understand that
"good first issue" is the way by which projects mark issues as - indeed -
good first issues to contribute as a GitHub standard.
For example all issues marked this way automatically land in the "
*contribute*" page of the project. This page has links to contribution
guidelines if projects have them and are often referred to by any sites
that have advice for people to start contributing. And the more projects
will start using it, the more "obvious" it will be for contributors that
they can use it. It might be even worth it to see how many projects already
follow it. Here are the pages from the projects I mentioned
* https://github.com/apache/beam/contribute
* https://github.com/apache/airflow/contribute
* https://github.com/apache/superset/contribute
* https://github.com/apache/iceberg/contribute
Those page also contain a nice explanation and encouragement explaining
what it is all about:
> Make your first contribution to this repository by tackling one of the
issues listed below.
> Read the contributing guidelines
> Each issue displayed here is a "good first issue," selected for its
relative approachability for first-time contributors.
