Whitespaces in tomcat install dir

Has anyone had success in installing Tomcat in directory which contains
whitespaces in its name? I've tries multiple versions of Tomcat with
different Java versions (1.4.0 - 1.4.1). The sympton is that I get
MalformedURLException when do RMI calls to Enterprise Beans.

For example if tomcat is installed under C:\Documents and Settings\xxx I
might get RemoteException with root cause MalformedURLException: no
protocol: and

There is a bug in Java Bug Parade which might be related to this

http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4466485.html

Is this Java bug related to this problem? Is there any way around this
problem? How can I install Tomcat into directory which contains whitespaces?

As I understand from tomcat-dev, this is currently considered to be a JVM
and/or install script (and/or, in some cases, application) problem. If you
are shipping Tomcat embedded, then my first guess is that you won't get many
developers interested until you prove that the problem is in Tomcat, and not
your embedding (:.

I don't want to sound negative. This is just how open-source works. The
fastest way to get this fixed is to identify where the problem is coming
from, and submit a patch to fix it.

Your better off just avoiding the use of directory names with spaces.

The big problem IMO with spaces is that spaces cause issues for Java
applications that have a classpath setting wherein the entire classpath is
not surrounded by quotation marks. The end result (without the quotes) is
that the classpath breaks at the space and then the JVM doesn't know where
to find any classes included on the classpath after the space.

This has been a long running issue in Java and unfortunately apps are still
built today without taking this into consideration.

In the end if you can control where you install a Java app then it probably
would be wise to simply assume you can't use spaces in the path names
(leading to your app and for the JRE/JDK).

I would avoid the recommended 8 char trick as your going to need to muck
around with Tomcat scripts (for very little benefit IMO).

HTH.

Those directories only contain spaces when used in the GUI.

The underlying way of addressing those directories, as Jacob has already
pointed out, is to use the 8 character shorthand, which should work.

"Program files" = "PROGRA~1"

"Documents and Settings" = "DOCUME~1"

The trick is figuring out, in your installer, what those names are and
using those instead of the names with spaces.

We don't have this option. We are bundling Tomcat embedded inside out
application and the end user can choose whatever installation directory
he wishes. "Program files" and "Documents and Settings" both contain
whitespaces.

Does anyone have an idea if this is a bug in Tomcat or in Java?

First, don't install to a directory with spaces. Period, end of story.

Second, if you don't heed that advice, here is an example of setting
CATALINA_HOME so that it works with spaces...

If the path is:
c:\program files\apache group\jakarta\tomcat-4.1.24

then do:
CATALINA_HOME=c:\progra~1\apache~1\jakarta\tomcat-4.1.24

Things should work, but I wouldn't count on it.
