Attaching proposed initial patch, it's still a WIP but the idea is to get some early feedback.

Some tests are now failing due to no being able to remove a node. I'm wondering if this is related to versioning somehow.

I'll also need to add some more tests :)
 
Second step is to wire this into the Node#getReferences call (OAK-1137).
