Avro is currently at 1.3.3 which is now 4 years old and before Avro became a top level project.  A good improvement would be to bring it up to the latest (1.7.6 today) to help solve the dependency conflicts one can find oneself in.

I expect this is an invasive change, but a comment from the committers on the feasibility of this would be really appreciated.
