I understood; since yesterday (Jul, 20) the URLs:

  http://apache.fis.uniroma2.it/

  ftp://cis.uniroma2.it/unix/packages/APACHE

point to the dist of the apache projects, "rsynced" from:
www.apache.org::apache-dist and the directory configured as recommended
in http://www.apache.org/info/how-to-mirror.html

Thanks for your patience,
                         Silio ( dangelo@gno.uniRoma2.it )

No difference at all other than protocol. In fact, I really don't care
too much about FTP mirrors. We add them to our list, but we highly prefer
HTTP.

There is really almost nothing of interest on www.apache.org. The
interesting stuff is contained on the project websites (httpd.apache.org,
jakarta.apache.org, etc). Unfortunately, we do not have a good
infrastructure in place to allow the mirroring of those sites.

But since almost all our bandwidth usage comes from downloads, providing
mirrors of apache-dist is a great way to help Apache.

Thanks. You will be in the next update.

. . .

It was in the configuration file we were using about one year ago. I
wondered what would be the difference between HTTP and FTP mirrors if
both are sourced from www.apache.org::apache-dist.

Anyway, I changed the scripts to use www.apache.org::apache-dist as told
in http://www.apache.org/info/how-to-mirror.html. It is a pity to not
have a true HTTP mirror though; would it make sense to "proxy-pass"
www.apache.org to allow people out here to easily access FAQs and
documentation ?

Please let me know if I misunderstood something and thanks for your
patience.

Why are you using dev.apache.org::apache-site? Can you tell me where you
got that information from, because we need to fix any documentation that
refers to that. It hasn't been valid in many years.

Please use the recommended location from here:
http://www.apache.org/info/how-to-mirror.html
which is www.apache.org::apache-dist.
