this looks like a leopard bug... JScrollPanes are assigned white background by the OS toolkit, and sometimes it is visible through the containing component on edges, sometimes it is not. In this particular case, I simply removed the JScrollPane wrappers from tabbed panels, replacing them with scrollers for each tab.
