Gentoo Linux has a HttpClient package

They have individual packages of Jakarta subprojects:

http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/pkgs/dev-java/commons-httpclient.xml

Yes, the install (from source no less) works smoothly.  Unfortunately 
it's not a good way to manage java packages since it's just too mixed 
up with the rest of the system for my liking and it makes it too hard 
to track what my project is actually using.

I do note that the build process is using the ant build file instead of 
maven though.
